Hello! I bet you’re surprised to see me around these parts!
Some of you may know this already, but I’ve been pretty laid up for the past couple of months with my back. I’ve been in and out of work since September and I can’t count how many times I’ve been to the doctor :( Last time I went to the doctor (hoping for a fit note so I could go back to work!), I was told that I had to take another two weeks off.
I’ve got to say though, work have been absolutely fantastic! My boss hasn’t said one word about the fact that I’ve been off for over a month now, and the only thing they’re concerned about is that I get back in shape again.
I know I should have done something productive with my time, but I’m going to blame those painkillers – they’re STRONG! I’ve taken them as little as possible and trying to find other ways to relieve the pain – I’ll mention some of them below, they’re pretty obvious though.
Heat – Seriously, heat is the absolute best thing for back pain. That and cold, although I spent a couple of weeks alternating between heat and cool packs before finally getting to see a physio who told me to just use the heat packs. Cold wouldn’t work for the type of back pain I’ve got.
I bought a couple of microwavable heat packs and I’ve used them constantly for the past couple of weeks. You wouldn’t believe how great they are – I’m going to have to order a couple more for when I go back to work so I can stash some in my desk.
Keeping with the heat theme, hot showers are a godsend. I’ve taken them as hot as I can possibly stand as the heat really lets my muscles relax.
Stretching – Urgh, it makes me want to cry just thinking about the stretches I’ve been given by the Physio. They hurt like hell and I literally cry my way through them, but ‘no pain, no gain’ or some rubbish like that – apparently all my muscles have seized up in my back and this is the only way to get them back to normal.
Short walks – but only when it’s a bearable temperature outside as the cold’s been making me worse. I’ve got very stiff joints at the moment so if I go out for too long in the cold I look like a little old lady!
Tea – We all know that tea cures everything, although I’ve got to admit that I could probably do with drinking less seeing as I’m writing this post at 7.30am and I’ve been up since about 10am yesterday!!
I think that’s enough of my rambles for now – I’ve got a physio appointment tomorrow so I’m off to make a list of things to ask
